Making The Decision To Home School

Before you make the decision to home school your child or children, there are a few things you need to take into consideration in order to determine if home schooling is right for you and your lifestyle.

  1. The first thing anyone considering home schooling should do, is to find out what rules govern home schooling in your state. A wonderful resource for this is the Home School Legal Defense Association, also known as HSLDA (Phone: 1-540-338-5600), or you can ask other home schoolers in your area.

  2. It will take about 3 to 5 hours per day to complete an average day's schoolwork. Sometimes, it may take less time. especially in the lower grades; for the upper grades, especially high school, it may take more time.

  3. You should home school at least 165 days per year, unless your state requires more days. Normally, homeschoolers spend at least 175 to 185 days in school. However it is not unusual to record a higher attendance number.
